Stillwater is thick with history. Stillwater is considered the historic birthplace of Minnesota. In 1848 the first territorial convention that began the process of establishing Minnesota as a state, was held on the corner of Myrtle and Main Street downtown. Stillwater is one of Minnesota’s oldest towns, preceding Minneapolis by years. At the time of incorporation as a city in 1854, Stillwater was the largest city in the state. The lumber industry made Stillwater famous. At the height of the log boom, Stillwater’s lumber mills were the largest in the country, making Minnesota one of the largest lumber markets in the world. This boom brought wealth, railroads, steamships, gas lights and grand homes. The Lumberjack celebrates that history with an educational timeline and beautiful old historic photos throughout the space.
The Jespersen family opened The Lumberjack to create a place where visitors can learn about Stillwater’s rich history and locals can find a home. They’ve aimed their sites on creating a space where people feel like they belong, where everyone is known, and all are welcome! The cozy cabin-like interior and lumber history is a throw back to Sara’s roots. Growing up, she spent most of her time in the woods, and finds that connection with nature a driving force in life. Her family roots started in Cook MN, where her great grandparents felled the trees on their land to create a farmstead. Every nook and cranny of The Lumberjack shares a different story, we hope you enjoy the journey.
